Dear

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the current level of tobacco duty in the UK.

During the last parliament tobacco taxation increased by more than 40%. The combined tax on the cheapest cigarettes on sale in the UK is a staggering 88%.

Excessive taxation encourages cross-border shopping and fuels the black market, hurting legitimate shopkeepers

In 2014/15 the Government lost an estimated £2.6 billion in revenue as a result of non-UK duty paid tax; an estimated £2.1 billion was lost to illicit trade, £0.5 billion to cross-border shopping.

Tobacco is a legal product. Punitive taxation is unfair on Britain’s eight million adult smokers. It discriminates against law-abiding consumers, especially those who are elderly or from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

With this in mind I hope you will support the campaign to axe the tobacco duty escalator and oppose further increases in tobacco taxation.
